Banffshire is famous for being the home of James Abercromby, (1706-1781). James was a British general in the American Revolution. Banffshire is also known as The County of Banff.
Banffshire remained a Roman Catholic strong hold after the Reformation in the 16th century. It suffered because of this in the ensuing struggles. In the English Revolution in the 17th Century Banffshire was a Royalist stronghold, swearing loyalty to King Charles II. King Charles remained a Protestant despite his family trying to convert him to Catholicism.
In 1975 Banffshire became part of the newly created Grampian Region.
